Improved Air Quality in School Buildings Starts
with Earth-Friendly Cleaners
Sustainability in
education is a high priority for Ohio administrators, parents and lawmakers as
evidenced in Ohio’s status as the state with the most LEED certified
educational buildings in the country. Honoring that priority in day-to-day operations
at Ohio schools means maintaining the healthiest environment possible for
students and administrators.
Air pollution inside a
building can be as much as five times higher than outside. This is partially
due to the types of cleaners we choose to use in confined spaces. Considering
the health of the occupants of a building—in this case, nearly 2 million
children in Ohio public schools alone—is of as much importance as how well the
product performs.
According to the Healthy
Schools Campaign Green Clean Schools web page (link: http://www.healthyschoolscampaign.org/programs/green-clean-schools/), some cleaners contain chemicals that can contribute to poor indoor air
quality, trigger asthma and other respiratory illnesses, which in turn can
contribute to long-term health problems such as cancer, reproductive disorders,
major organ damage and permanent eye damage.
Environmentally friendly
cleaners can help students and administrators stay healthy by reducing the
hazards that negatively affect indoor air quality and in turn, our health. Custodial
staff are particularly vulnerable to exposure to potentially harmful chemicals
and can benefit greatly when safer alternatives are chosen.
Additional benefits that
schools often report include saving money on custodial supplies, improved
attendance records and a pervasive sense of pride in preserving the
environment—by staff and students alike.
Although the buckeye
state is at the head of the class on this issue, Ohio is not alone in its
objective to improve the learning environment of our school children. Healthy
and sustainable schools are a high priority for a lot of Americans.
Seventy-five percent are supportive of green schools and 90% would like to see
improvements to their local schools.
At Mailender, we are
proud to offer a wide variety of sustainable cleaners suitable for improving
indoor air quality at your educational institution. Contact us to discuss which
products are best suited for maintaining your Green School.
