Three Tips For Saving Money On Supplies
Whether you’re ordering supplies for a
small office or an entire university, cost saving is an important component of
successful budgeting. Working with a supplier who can help you find the right
products for your needs is an important first step. But if you need to pinch
pennies a little further, use some of these tips for a quick boost to your
bottom line:
Pick the right
product for the job: You wouldn't use a sledgehammer in
place of a ballpein hammer; similarly, you don’t need to over do it with your
supplies. A great example of this is trashcan liners. Using a trashcan liner
that’s too large for the receptacle can add up to as much as 70% waste.
Consider the durability and weight of
the product as well. Most packages (under 10 lbs) can be successfully sealed
with conventional packing tape. Using heavy-duty packing tape on small packages
only adds weight to the package and cost to your budget.
Think about cost per unit. Toilet paper
is a necessary expense for any business. Even if you have a small staff, you
may save plenty of money by buying something like toilet paper in bulk—provided
you have the space for storage.
Avoid Brands that
“lock you in:” When you consider a supply purchase, especially equipment, consider how
many accessories you’ll need to purchase in order to make you new acquisition
work. Compare all the various parts of the purchase to the whole package from
another manufacturer before making your final decision. It’s possible that
spending a little more upfront can save money in the long run.
Buy Supplies Online: Buying office, restaurant and custodial supplies
online can save both time and money. Good online suppliers offer comprehensive
catalogs and simple purchasing systems. Contacting customer service for
questions and advice should be easy and immediate. Some suppliers will offer
discounts on quantity, which is a savings bonus.
